Drawtober

Author: neauoire responded:

Is anyone interested in doing a drawing a day this coming month?

Author: tendigits responded:

Yes. Should we have a set of Merv prompts?

Author: James Chip responded:

I am hoping to do it again this year.

I did M R James stories last year and this year I was toying with the idea of doing quick sketches of different mosses.

Author: chötrin. responded:

Gonna be pretty busy moving into our new house and going to pride in October with friends, but I haven’t been watercoloring/inking in a while and I’d like to do at least one piece!

Author: rostiger responded:

I’ve been playing with the thought to participate this year. Would be the first time, ever! I’ll be sailing the first week of October, so I’m not sure how much I’d be able to follow through, but I’d like to try! Should there be a theme?

Author: rostiger responded:

Hey chötrin, I recently saw the watercolors on your website and wanted to mention that I thought they were really nice. Would love to see more of them!

Author: chötrin. responded:

Ohmigosh, thank you for saying that! I feel so scatterbrained when it comes to making art. It’s like exercise for me— I always sort of dread it and then when I sit down to do it, I feel good afterwards!

I really like your piece with the boat/treehouse on a cliff, too! I’d love to see everyone’s stuff, even if you can’t knock out a piece a day!

Author: neauoire responded:

Prompts might be nice, I normally don’t use them much, last year I was using Wipeout ship names for myself. We could do like locations in the Myst universe?

Author: chötrin. responded:

Oh that’s a super cool idea! Or maybe to widen it up, scenes/locations from adventure games? I could think of a few from series like The Journeyman Project, Quest For Glory, and Space Quest that I’d totally like to pay homage to!

Author: tendigits responded:

From a fan wiki site: ages visited, and then those only mentioned. It’s been so long since I played, these names as prompts would be quite abstract, which I think is cool. Is this enough to create a list from, or should we open it up more as @chötrin suggested?

Author: tendigits responded:

Oh wait, this is definitely not enough. We need a months worth. What was I thinking.

Author: nerdypepper responded:

i bottom out after a few days of drawing, but i’d like to try, as a challenge!

Author: sejo responded:

ages visited, and then those only mentioned

i didn’t understand this, tendigits! however, i love your list and would enjoy using it

in any case, i’m interested in joining :)

Author: neauoire responded:

Thanks for the list :) It’ll be what I’ll use, I might do two days for each or something like that. Two more days left before we begin!

Author: tendigits responded:

@sejo in Myst the places are called “ages” it’s confusing. I believe the first 7 in the list are actually in the game, the rest are just mentioned.

Here are some links to maps and game images. Some of these links have spoilers to the game if that matters to you. http://myst.donotknow.com/index.php?game=myst http://myst.sandman.net/pages/DownloadMyMystIslandMap https://myst.umwblogs.org/images/ http://www.myst5.com/mystgallery.html

I picked a subset of 15 from the list to use. I will probably create images unrelated to the game.

Author: sejo responded:

@tendigits ah, thanks, i missed (or should i say, “i myst”?) that these were from a game — in any case they work for me!

@neauoire were you thinking in posting your drawings over here?

Author: neauoire responded:

@sejo yeah! We could make unique threads too, what do you prefer?

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 1

Junction between Risan Aldeth and Kirleane. I’ve been thinking about filling in some of the gaps in the world where two regions meet, this is a quick one to get warmed up.

day1

Author: James Chip responded:

I am off the start line! drawing of a moss plant with close up of leaf

Author: tendigits responded:

It took 3 very different tries before I got something workable, but here’s my day 1. ink drawing of landscape

Author: James Chip responded:

That’s lovely. It has an linocut quality to it.

Author: tendigits responded:

Thanks @James Chip! I really like your botanical drawings btw.

Day 2

drawing of old building on hill

Author: neauoire responded:

Day2

Drawing of Coralinev waiting for pickup in Dilitriel.

glider

I’ve drawn the glider once during inktober two years ago:

Day two. ink drawing of calyptra and capsule

Author: tendigits responded:

Day Three

This is supposed to be the rocky outcropping of an island into an ocean, but it ended up semi-abstract… which I kind of like.

ink drawing

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits Lovely abstract piece, it’s nice to see the different brush sizes :)

Day 3

Andes returning through the Injection Shift, it’s a kind of machine that lets the operator hack at events in different timelines.

andes in the injection shift

I’ve drawn another one of these time machines with lots of atmospherics particles last year.

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire thanks, I’m enjoying this chisel tip. Your geometric and architectural landscapes continue to inspire. A lot of atmosphere and space conveyed in so few pixels.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 4

My process has been to read a tiny bit about the current age, then look up similar attributes + “landscape” on wikimedia commons. From there I find a reference image and create a pencil sketch on grey paper. Finally I’m inking with black chisel ink pen and uni-ball white pen. I’ve never been great at landscapes, so this is helping me get more comfortable with them.

snowy mountain landsacpe ink drawing.

Author: neauoire responded:

One thing that you could try if you’re interested in doing more landscape drawing is using line thickness to convey distance, for example, you captured it in your first drawing, giving it a sense that it was taken by a camera with some depth(50mm lens), and your last one for example, since all the line are the same thickness, it flattens is up so it feels like it was taken from very far away with something like a 200ms lens.

Something to toy with if you’re interested and since your pen has variable line thickness.

Day 3

Free diving down the Duomic Gulfs. I’m having fun doing sequences from the previous year’s Inktobers, this one is following this one.

My process is looking at the list and finding a word on which my brain gets stuck, today was “Osmoian”, and finding a place in the world that share some sort of connection and going to check it out.

diving in Duomo

Author: neauoire responded:

I was listening to Bad Sector’s Chronoland on repeat this morning, it has such a good diving into a machine vibe.

Author: tendigits responded:

One thing that you could try if you’re interested in doing more landscape drawing is using line thickness to convey distance

That’s a great idea, thank you. I think I will.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 5

Getting some differentiation between foreground and background with line thickness, albeit still quite crude.

ink sketch of an island in a lake

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits Looks great! You used thicker lines for the foreground elements.

Day 4

Rework of an old drawing I didn’t like, in which, Neonev is in one of the small Ver’Tal park with a repair kit. One thing I love with this low-res pixelart style is that it’s lossless, I can always rework and refine a picture without loosing any details.

at the docks

Author: neauoire responded:

Arca’s Front Load track was the perfect mood for painting this scene.

Author: James Chip responded:

@tendigits that water looks ace.

Author: James Chip responded:

Day 3. Dicranella heteromalla. I love the dicranellas because they always look like they are showing their leaves off in the wind.

moss

Author: James Chip responded:

Day 4.

Grimmia pulvinata.

The little dense green blobs of moss on rooftops.

moss

Author: nerdypepper responded:

@neauoire, your line work is just amazing!

Author: tendigits responded:

So great to visit this page later in the day and find beautiful new drawings from @neauoire and @James Chip :)

Day 6

ink drawing of forest

Author: cblgh responded:

i love popping in my head on this thread and seeing what’s being made. tendigits: i really love day 6!! seems like the feedback from earlier in the thread is really making itself known in this one :)

Author: James Chip responded:

Day 5 moss

Author: James Chip responded:

Day 6.

Almost complete study of Leptobryum pyriforme.

moss

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits Loving that last one :)

Day 5

Scene of Neonev crossing through to the Risan Aldeth from Kirleane. Looking at old drawings from the Neauismetica, I guess I’m becoming a tiny bit more daring with poses.

kirleane

Listening to Mio Takaki which I love because it reminds me so much of Phantasy Star Online soundtrack for some reason.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 7

I’m not very pleased with this one, but it’s where I landed today.

ink drawing of winter trees in front of a lake

Author: James Chip responded:

Day 7.

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 7

It seems I missed a day at some point? We’re the 7th, but I only have 6 drawings made so far, I can’t quite figure out which day I’ve missed. Very puzzling.

I really liked drawing that previous picture with the toolbox, so I decided to make another one with the sort of Aitaslan Mirrors in the background.

mirrors repair

We were out all day today, didn’t get to do much at all so I had to finish this one up quickly.

Author: cblgh responded:

this one is soo good neauoire! really love seeing gadgets and utils enter the world :3 fwiw i think you missed day 6?

Author: James Chip responded:

Day 8.

Author: jbauer responded:

neauoire: I see seven drawings here, but on 2022-10-04 you called it Day 3 instead of Day 4 which threw the rest of the counts off by one :).

Author: neauoire responded:

Oh that’s what happened XD..

Day 8

Today’s going to be an edit of old drawing that annoyed me each time I saw it. I had Andes there in the scene, but I realized a year later that it didn’t make any sense in the timeline, so I’ve taken the character out of the frame. So it’s just Neonev in the Es Plains with the wind battered panels.

Es Plains

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 8

ink drawing of subterranean landscape

Author: James Chip responded:

I really like these. I might have to grab some grey paper and give using both black and white ink a go. What white pen are you using?

Author: tendigits responded:

@james thanks! It’s a uni-ball signo broad white.

Author: neauoire responded:

Little picture of the Neonic Consoles, I think I spent more time trying to figure out how to draw a freakin sphere than the rest of the scene, but it was nice to learn a bit of trigonometry this morning.

Neonic Consoles

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire it was worth it, that looks amazing.

Author: neauoire responded:

Thanks ^^

Day 10

A yet larger toolbox ;)

yajnev convoy

It’s been so nice to draw each morning, it clears my mind up for the rest of the day, I think it’s been good for my mood too. I really should draw more often. Had some good music to keep me company too.

Author: tendigits responded:

Days 9 10 11

I missed a couple days and decided to resolve it via a triptych instead of 3 drawings.

ink drawing in three parts of three different landscapes

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 11

So I was going to make a new piece today, but I caught myself browsing some of the inktobers from 2 years ago, and spotted this old one, which I still love, but had all these very annoying issues with it.

I had drawn it in Hypercard, which is quite a pretty good program, but it’s missing a lot of the niceties of Noodle which helps correcting jagged edges and things like that.

So, I’ve gone over it and cleaned it up.

I might make another one today since it’s only 10am

Author: neauoire responded:

Felt like drawing some more. I could spent my entire days painting these kind of atmospheric effects

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire These have such a great vibe. The rain drops on this last one are really nice. UxnMyst.rom when?

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 12

ink drawing of desert landscape

Author: James Chip responded:

I really like that one.

Author: James Chip responded:

I have been keeping up but been so busy I have forgotten to post them here, but heres day 12.

Author: tendigits responded:

@James Chip that plant looks other-worldly, very nice rendering.

Day 13

ink drawing of mountain landscape

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits I think that one is my favourite of the series, it’s on the abstract side but also has all sorts of depth to it which is nice.

I didn’t make one yesterday, I wanted to finish up the resurrection of the Nook eReader with @bd. I did two the previous day anyways.

Day 13

Took a little detour and visited the Vetetrandes, it had been a while since I last drawn one of its scenes.

autoconstructor reef

Another one of the autoconstruction reefs from inktober 2019.

reef old

These are fun geometric shapes to paint.

Author: tendigits responded:

Thanks @neauoire I’m starting to establish some brush stroke styles I prefer, which I think also helps. BTW, How are you generating the geometry in your drawings, does the drawing program you created allow coding shapes and also pixel manipulation?

Day 14

ink drawing of landscape from within a cave

Author: neauoire responded:

I first make the guide lines in moogle, they’re usually pretty crude, but it gives me enough idea about the perspective to build the scene.

ss

Author: neauoire responded:

Originally, I wrote this program for the classic macintosh in Pascal, then I ported it so I can use it on Plan9 and Linux.

graph3dscene

Author: tendigits responded:

Oh cool - what an interesting process. Thanks for explaining.

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 14

Made a characterless drawing of a pretty central moment in the Neauismetica, it’s called The Library Of Sand, it’s when Neonev first landed on the shores of Dilitriel(Whiinders).

library of sand

I never drew this particular place as part of Inktober before, but I did draw it once on its own.

library of sand

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 15

ink drawing of beach at low tide

Author: tendigits responded:

This was meant to be a beach at low tide with ripples in the sand, but I’m happy with it looking like long grasses in a meadow too ;)

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits Nice one, the black and white strokes makes it glow!

Day 14

Drew Neonev climbing up the big Portalion pear-shaped bottles today.

portalion pears

Never drew this part of Whiinders during Inktober before, but I did draw them on one of the Aliceffekt album covers a while back.

portalion pears

Author: cblgh responded:

holy shit i think this might be my favorite so far, neauoire! the perspective, terrain and pose really comes together :o

Author: neauoire responded:

@cblgh glad you you like, waking up this morning I noticed that the perspective on the distant pear bottle is kind of off and it gives it a funny look, I might rework it later.

Day 16

I have things to do this morning so I can’t really do a whole new piece, but I had a bit of time so I’ve reworked an old one that annoyed me.

paradichlorisse

It’s a picture of Neonev sitting in front of Paradichlorisse, which is a sort of .. ribbon-type pokemon that predicts the past.

paradichlorisse

Good vibes to draw to.

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire the scale and textures on the bottles from yesterday look great. This ribbon shape might be my favorite so far, a very different type of element to mix with the geometry/perspective elements.

Day 16

ink drawing of layered landscape

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 17

ink drawing of a landscape view from within a cave

Author: cblgh responded:

oooh i love the perspective you’ve gotten into this latest one tendigits! very nice :)

Author: tendigits responded:

Thanks @cblgh that advice of @neauoire’s to alter brush stroke for depth is working great here.

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits Loving that last one too! It’s nice to have things in foreground like that, one thing you could try, is even tho the strokes up-front are thicker, go over it once more with smaller details to give a sense that it’s closer and not out of focus.

focus

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 17

More Duomic sunken structure scenery for today :)

duomo

Author: tendigits responded:

Thanks @neauoire that makes sense and is a nice idea, I’ll keep it in mind. It’s really helpful to have this kind of feedback.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 18

ink drawing of coastal bay

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 18

Drew a little scene called the Oasis, which is a place where a sort of creature dwell called Rlionn. That being sometimes manifest as birds, which are on many of my album covers, I felt like drawing the place where all the birds hang out.

oasis

Author: dom responded:

loving the recent posts, tendigits and neauoire, you’re both on an impressive streak and i enjoy getting to visit these worlds!

Author: tendigits responded:

Thanks @dom, I’m liking this forum as a nice quiet spot to post these :)

Day 19

ink drawing of mountain range

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 19

I got super distracted this morning, by the time I looked up at the time start drawing, it was already 10:00, so I didn’t really feel like getting on something too ambitious. Tomorrow, I’ll go above and beyond-

I’ve done a rework of a scene from last year that really annoys the heck out of me every time I see it, I call it “fixing the Windows98 logos”. I always hated these rectangular interfaces to the Aitasla Reflectors, and I went ahead and corrected that this morning.

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 21

A strong gust washing over the Valentinel Bridge.

gust

I’ve drawn this place 2 years ago, and it’s funny to look at now, I’ve gotten a lot more comfy with character poses, all the characters then looked like stick-figures.

gust

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 22

We have errands to run this morning, so I can’t really do it this morning, but I managed to snuck a few minutes and redraw the character pose and comp of this Vertale scene from last year.

Author: tendigits responded:

Days 21,22,23

Catching up from missing a couple days with another triptych. This might be in the running for one of my least favorite. Hopefully tomorrow will bear better fruit.

ink drawing of three mini landscapes

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 24

Phew, ok back to some results I’m pleased with. Today’s drawing felt right the whole way through.

ink drawing of a landscape

Author: neauoire responded:

@tendigits I love that last one, I like that you’ve decided to trace the trees in detail up close, works well.

Day 24

I got caught up yesterday helping someone with something and never got to actually sit and finish up my drawing, dammit.

So today I drew a scene of the Duomic Archives that have crashed to the bottom of the sea after the explosion of Yajnev.

duomic archives

Author: neauoire responded:

Hey only a week left for Drawtober! I’m happy to see you’ve stuck to it ^__^ It’s nice to do this with someone else.

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire Thanks for the kind words, and yeah I can’t believe the month is coming to a close already. Also thanks for suggesting posting in here - it’s been a nice balance of accountability and inspiration without feeling quite as noisy as posting in a feed.

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 25

I felt like doing something a bit different today, so I painted a scene of a character dancing on the moon, which is sort of a figure of speech in the Neauismetica to mean that you’ve seen the time knife.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 25

I was trying to do something with patterns, but it didn’t turn out quite right.

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire the dark moon sky from your last drawing creates such a nice contrast.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 26

I’m pleased with this one. I think the textures and line quality I’m getting out of the chisel brush pen are working this time.

ink drawing of a landscape

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 27

The reference photo I used here was taken with a rather extreme lens. I noticed the distortions end up being part of my illustration.

ink drawing of trees by a lake

Author: neauoire responded:

Wow, day 27 is gorgeous! Definitely my new favourite now. Feels like the wind is brushing through the woods from behind, it’s beautiful with the shadows coming down like this.

I’m doing my day 27th atm, I missed yesterday, but not for the lack of drawing, I was drawing slides for a talk I have coming up soon. I was just tired of drawing by lunchtime, but today I’ll have something :)

Author: neauoire responded:

Day 27

This morning I wanted to draw one of the few ornate location on Dinaisth, and have Parchlo burst through the Yajnevic Valve.

yajnevic valve

Author: tendigits responded:

@neauoire thanks for the kind words! Your day 27 looks great and is action packed with so much motion, like a cork popping from a bottle.

Author: tendigits responded:

Day 28

A calm woodland scene for this one.

ink drawing of forest scene

Author: neauoire responded:

Lovely scene for 28! The white for highlights work better in this one that the others, you can see the light peeking through the trees.

Day 28

Felt like drawing arches, so I made lots of arches.

arches

Author: bd responded:

been silently watching these and I really enjoyed finding a couple new drawings here everyday :)

Author: tendigits responded:

Glad you’ve been enjoying @bd! @neauoire I liked seeing the process for the arches via your posts in town. I decided to try snapping a couple in-process pics for this one to do the same (which I’ll share this morning over there).

Day 29

I searched for a landscape with lake, and found the reference photo for this. I wasn’t expecting a frozen lake, but I enjoyed the contrasts.

Day 31

Last one for the month!

Since we had a guest aboard yesterday I didn’t get to do my drawing, but instead today I also fixed up this one from last year, which today’s another from that same location.

Until next year :)
